From Hutch: Minor Changes and Reminders

First, you may have noticed the name change to the editor's column. After, several months of deliberation and the people of Andrew County meeting via this column, I decided that you people know enough personal details about me.My wife says it is important for people to know me.I have a different opinion.Anyway, I am part of the Savannah community and diligently delivering your news from four hours away in Hutchinson, Kan. Hence, From Hutch is the new name.I understand there is still concern about my ability to run a newspaper this far away.As an editor for another paper, I successfully covered six different communities with 10 schools and six-to-eight local government entities across two counties, mostly all by remote. Before that, I was a news director and one-man team for a radio station that serviced all of southwest Kansas.Savannah is in good hands. That said, I encourage you to continue to reach out to us with story ideas and accomplishments.A newspaper is only as strong as its community.I keep hearing, "why did you not cover this?" "Did you know this was happening?"Contrary to popular belief, we are not omnipresent nor telepathic. We rely on a network to tell us when things are happening. To submit your story ideas, call the Savannah Reporter at (816) 324-3149 and select option 2 or dial extension #2071 to reach me directly.

Caring for the Mind: Diagnosis of Mental Disorders

“Diagnosis” is a word derived from ancient Greek, meaning “knowing differences” and “telling things apart.” In medicine, diagnosis describes diseases and physical conditions from symptoms and tests – tests of blood, tissue, electrical conductivity, X-rays, scans, and gene analysis. Very often in medicine, a diagnosis leads to specific indicated treatments and to a disease’s prognosis.

Relentless

It’s the paltry attempt at humility that rings untrue.

Celebrate yourself

My 30th birthday is this week.I stopped celebrating and caring about my birthday at around age 9 or 10. No details but I was very nihilistic and cynical before completing elementary school. What always made me interested about my birthday was the week. You see, my grandfather was born on on Jan.

It's Now Nifty to Be Thrifty

Use of the word “thrift” has taking on a rather new connotation in these latter years of a built-in obsolescence and the everything easily disposable world. But it still brings to mind a torrent of sayings, proverbs, and old wives’ wisdom (don’t disparage that, some of those old wives were pretty, well… nifty).

Getting Inspiration

I have written before about the pillars of daily mental health: (1) regular reflection on how lucky we are, (2) doing acts of kindness or making an impact of doing good, (3) engagement with other people, and (4) laughter and appreciation of the humor in life. A little bit of each of these every day as we make our way through life enriches our mental health, resilience, stability, emotional balance, and positive attitude.

New Year’s Resolutions

For three years running, Beyond Reason has considered the new year’s resolution. A new year’s resolution is just a goal, a commitment, ranging from the very specific (lose ten pounds/only eat a whole food plant-based diet/save $5000) to the very abstract (workout more/eat better/save something).
