The Savannah Savages boys team went 1-2 in the Savannah Invitational Tournament last week to open the season. The Savages will play just two games over the next two weeks.“I feel like we were pretty streaky,” said Jordan Richman, Savannah head coach.
The Savannah Savages girls basketball team have gone out of their way to play a tough schedule in the early part of the season. The Savages opened the season with a 54-41 loss to Platte County.Savannah then went 2-0 in the Savannah Invitational Tournament, defeating Lincoln College Prep and South Harrison.
Savannah wrestling is on the rise, and there has never been a more thrilling time to get involved and support the program.From the youth level to the high school mats, the local wrestling community is growing stronger each year, with passionate athletes, dedicated coaches, and a supportive fan base.However, to take the various wrestling programs to the next level, the Matside Savage Club, a fundraising coalition of Savannah High School (SHS) wrestling program parents, could use the community's help.The excitement begins with the Savannah Youth Wrestling program, which had an amazing turnout of 84 young wrestlers sign-up this year. These future champions are learning the fundamentals and building the foundation for a strong pipeline into the junior high and high school programs.
The North Andrew Cardinals opened the season with a 57-36 win over the Stanberry Bulldogs in the opening round of the Albany Tournament. The Cardinals then dropped their next games, giving them fourth place in the tournament.“We pride ourselves on playing hard, being tough, and competing every single night,” said Wade Bryson, North Andrew head coach.
The Savannah Savages took a step or two in the right direction last season, winning nine games after a combined seven wins the previous two seasons. This season, the Savages hope to continue the process of improving.“I feel like last year we had some really positive moments,” Savannah head coach Jordan Richman said.
The North Andrew Cardinals have some experience in coaching changes as the girls basketball program begins the season with a new head coach for the third-straight year. New head coach Audrey Elifrits coached at DeKalb last season and brings expectations to program.“My expectations are to be very competitive this season, and with eight upperclassmen, we have the experience to do so,” Elifrits said.
The Savannah Savages won against Smithville in the Class 4 District Semifinals with a close 11-10.
The scores were similar, but the path was different as North Andrew’s season came to an end the way it started. Losing to the Nodaway Valley Thunder.

The Savannah Savages and Smithville Warriors have taken very similar tracks to the Class 4 District 8 semifinals. Friday night in Smithville, the former MEC foes will face off for a chance at next week’s district championship.
